1964 to Today

A Signal Beyond the Ordinary

REM began as a signal at sea. Independent, unfiltered and far beyond the limits of convention.

In 1964, a platform rose from the North Sea, built to create space for something new. From this offshore location, Radio Noordzee broadcast its signal—not because it fit within the existing system, but because it challenged it.

It was a place driven by innovation, experimentation and the courage to do things differently. What started as a broadcasting platform quickly became a symbol of freedom, creativity and forward thinking.

That spirit never disappeared.

Today, REM stands above the IJ in Amsterdam. No longer at sea, but still distinct from the ordinary. The platform has found a new home and purpose, while carrying the same pioneering energy that defined its origins.

Today, we broadcast in a different way.

Through our restaurant, rooftop, events and meeting spaces, each with its own frequency, yet all connected by the same vision. Not separate concepts, but one platform where experiences come together. From day to night, from intimate gatherings to large-scale celebrations.

Still independent. Still forward-looking. Still creating our own signal.

Second Life

The state took the platform. From 1974, Rijkswaterstaat used it to measure waves, water and weather. Three decades of quiet work, far from the noise of broadcasting. In 2006, it was taken apart and shipped to shore. It could have ended there. In 2011, the platform arrived in Amsterdam's Nieuwe Houthaven. Renovated, with an extra floor. Restaurant, bar, rooftop, events. Same steel. Same legs. Still tuned to its own frequency.
